BIVER Alfred
Mathias Alfred Victor BIVER was born in Brussels in 1842. He was the son of the couple André BIVER – Anne Justine GÉRARD.
Alfred’s father André BIVER was a medical doctor, born in Ettelbruck in 1794. He first practised in Echternach (resided in Lauterborn) and later in Luxembourg-city. He was a strong supporter of the Grand-Duchy joining Belgium in 1830 when the latter separated from The Netherlands. In 1839, however, when the Grand-Duchy finally was declared an independent territory under the Dutch King, André BIVER and his family moved to Brussels. (This explains why Alfred BIVER, the last of André’s 8 children, was born in Belgium while all his siblings were born in Luxembourg.)
Alfred BIVER qualified as engineer at the Ecole Centrale in Paris and joined the French glass manufacturing company Saint-Gobain where his elder brothers Hector (b. 1823) and Pierre (b. 1829) already held important positions.
In 1881 Alfred became Directeur Général of the Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, following in the footsteps of his older brother Hector.
Alfred retired in 1903 and died the same year in Paris. He had been married twice, first with Lucie ARNOULD (1849-1876) with whom he had two children, and later with Marie ROUSSET (1855-1940) with whom he had 4 children.
