MARTIN Mathias

MARTIN was born in Welscheid in 1882. His father, Jean MARTIN, was born in Eschdorf and his mother Susanne BETZ was born in Welscheid. His father’s occupation was Maurer (builder).
MARTIN became a well-known architect in Luxembourg-city where he lived, first in Avenue Guillaume (n° 14), and later in the rue Albert Ier (n° 40 and n° 42).
He designed, among others, the Villa Pauly, the Villa Clivio, the Villa Belair and the Villa Robur …
MARTIN was married to Marie HENGEN and had one son called Robur Peter.
He also took an interest in local politics (Hollerich) and founded in 1916 the company:

Cinéma Parisien, Mathias Martin, Luxembourg. – Cinéma. – Exploitant: Mathias Martin, architecte, Hollerich-Merl. — Directeur- gérant: Hubert Marzen, Luxembourg, pouvoir général pour la gérance.

MARTIN’s grandson, Jean-Paul MARTIN, guardian of his grand-father’s archives, was at the origin of a short biography which was published in 2010 in the magazine “Ons Stad” edited by the City of Luxembourg.
In an earlier publication of 1989, Robert PHILIPPART concentrated on MARTIN’s work as architect in Luxembourg-city.
In 2021, Claude CONTER published a biography of MARTIN as a literary author.
Mathias MARTIN died in 1943 in Luxembourg-city (Prinz Eugen-Strasse 97).
