LANTZ Jospeh

(1869 - 1944)
Metz (FR)

Joseph (August) LANTZ was born in Metz in 1869. His father, Philipp Joseph LANTZ, born in Strasbourg, was a tourneur in Metz.
In 1871 the family LANTZ moved from Metz to Strasbourg where Philipp Joseph joined the “Chemins de fer de l’Est”.
Around 1880 the LANTZ family came to Luxembourg (between 1878 and 1883) and settled in Hollerich-Bonnevoie. Father Philipp Joseph worked for the “Chemins de fer Guillaume”.
According to a newspaper report of 1884, son Joseph LANTZ was a student at the “Fortbildungsschule” in Luxembourg.
Father (Philipp Joseph) died around 1900. The family’s estate was put up for sale in an auction in 1901 (Theilungshalber Möbel- und Hausversteigerung). Philipp Joseph had 5 children.
In 1903 Joseph LANTZ married Elisabeth AREND, born in Bonnevoie.
He became a Klempner (ferblantier) and, at least as of 1905, he had his own workshop in 2 Baumstrasse (rue du Verger), Bonnevoie. He later offered the services of Klempner and Installateur (1926).
In 1933, at the age of 64, LANTZ put his house and atelier up for sale. He apparently had no success since, two years later, he put his estate up for sale again.
It is probable that, in the end, the second auction was not successful either and that his son Jean Joseph (b. 1904) carried on the business. In 1950 a ferblantier by the name Joseph LANTZ can still be found in Bonnevoie.
Joseph LANTZ died in Luxembourg in 1944.
