KAUFFMANN Evrard

(1882 - 1947)
Beringen

Evrard KAUFFMANN, born 1882 in Beringen/Mersch, was registered at birth as Edouard Karl Nicolas. He was the son of Peter Heinrich KAUFFMANN (Buchhalter), born in Prussia.
In 1911 Evrard married Maria Johanna Franziska Stephanie SCHMIT in Hollerich. His occupation was Betriebschef and he resided in Luxembourg-city. He probably was employed by Jean Charles PRINTZ who owned two businesses.
He operated an ironmonger’s shop (Eisenwaaren und Quincailleriegeschäft) in Luxembourg-city (Wassergasse 4) and built safes and kitchen stoves in Luxembour-Gare (rue Neyperg 19a and rue Mercier). Jean Charles PRINTZ had bought the latter company from Joseph BODEVING in 1905.
PRINTZ died in 1911, at the age of 43. He had three sons, aged respectively 14, 12 and 9 at the time. His wife Margaretha PAQUÉ stepped in for a few years to keep the company going but she sold the safe and kitchen stove manufacturing business branch to Evrard KAUFFMANN in 1919. The latter thus became the successor of the original BODEVING enterprise, which explains why he claimed that his business was founded in 1840 (by Joseph BODEVING’s father).
The quincaillerie PRINTZ survived up to 2014 when it was taken over by the HOFFMANNS group (owners of Batiself, Bati C, Citabel and Hoffmanns Alzingen).
Evrard KAUFFMANN moved the safe manufacturing business in 1927 from rue Neyperg to Millewee in Hollerich. In 1927 he obtained the title of “Fournisseur de la Cour”.
In 1931 Jos SEIL joined KAUFFMANN and upon KAUFFMANN’s death took over the business in 1948.
Evrard KAUFFMANN died in 1947 in Luxembourg-city.
